De nye ”landbrugere” udgør stort og overset potentiale

For nye typer iværksættere står dét at bo og være på stedet – i naturen og lokalsamfundet – centralt, og deres erhvervsaktivitet er integreret i bosætning. Man kan kalde dem ”nye landbrugere”.

Men de er næsten usynlige, for de ligner ikke almindelige virksomheder og slet ikke klassisk landbrug, og de passer f.eks. ikke ind i erhvervsstatistik.

Bag hver femte dør på denne vej på fotoet til venstre, findes der en virksomhed. Ikke nødvendigvis særlig synlig, men med til at skabe omsætning og lokal vækst.

Hvis man sætter mere fokus på dem og deres potentialer, kan de blive en central brik i udviklingspolitikken.
 Det er en pilotundersøgelse gennemført i landdistrikter i Vejle kommuner, der har løftet en flig af dette, og personen, der har lavet undersøgelsen, kommer til træffet den 25. september.

Det er seniorforsker Hanne W. Tanvig, som ved jubilæumsreceptionen vil komme med et indlæg de nye landbrugere, der kan blive meget betydningsfulde for udvikling også i yderområder.

De nye landbrugere overses
- Ny erhvervsudvikling i landdistrikter er sjældent et centralt tema i debatten, siger Hanne W. Tanvig, der i øvrigt er ophavskvinde til udtrykket Den Rådne Banan, noget hun ikke personligt er stolt af, men er et udtryk, der har givet en enorm effekt og forståelse for yderområdernes udfordringer og potentialer.
-  Der finder en erhvervsudvikling sted, som er værd at få frem i lyset, både til fordel for landdistrikterne selv og for samfundsøkonomien i almindelighed. Men måske handler den manglende opmærksomhed i debatten om, at vi ikke har øje for det nye, herunder at vi ikke ved, hvordan vi skal måle det, fremhæver Hanne Tanvig i undersøgelsen ”Mere mellem himmel og jord”, som er publiceret af Skov & Landskab, Københavns Universitet.

To nye typer selvstændige inddrager lokalsamfundet
Forskerne har ledt efter muligheden af andre iværksættertypers eksistens end de traditionelle. De har ledt efter typer, der har en anden logik bag det at etablere en ny økonomisk aktivitet og som tænker over (gen)brug af lokale ressourcer på nye måder, og de har ledt efter nye aktører med andre baggrunde, end den, der driver den traditionelle iværksættervirksomhed.
De nye typer, som undersøgelsen identificerer, udspringer af fællesskabet og fællesskabets gøremål for udvikling.  Der er tale om to slags:

1. Lokale fællesskabsentreprenører, ”social entrepreneurship” – der arbejder
for fællesskabet/miljøet/sociale og kulturelle relationer, der kan, men ikke
nødvendigvis, aflede økonomisk aktivitet i området
2. Lokale økonomiske entreprenører, ”community business entrepreneurship”
– har direkte lokaløkonomisk udvikling med baggrund i fællesskabet
for øje og har desuden fokus på miljøet/sociale og kulturelle forhold.

Lokale aktører skal åbne øjnene
- I forhold til de nyere udviklingsteorier har vi fået bekræftet, at der findes masser af spirende erhvervsaktivitet, og især at der findes nye erhvervstyper i landdistrikter, som kan siges at have en særlig samhørighed med landdistrikterne. Det klassiske erhvervsbegreb med dertil hørende instrumenter må altså suppleres, siger Hanne Tanvig.
- I forhold til fremme af landdistriktsudvikling er der meget at tage fat på møntet på de spirende erhverv eller iværksætterne selv, men også på de lokale aktører. De kan spille en stor rolle og har en stor opgave foran sig, i tæt samarbejde med de spirende erhverv, siger Hanne W. Tanvig i undersøgelsen.

Søg bevidst og lær at måle
Hun reflekterer yderligere:  – Undersøgelsen viser, at med en bevidst søgning kan vi få øje på mange nye erhverv, som ofte så til gengæld ikke er ”almindelige” virksomheder eller iværksættere.
Undersøgelsen viser generelt set, at det at måle og veje nye erhverv i landdistrikterne i det hele taget bør foretages med en anden målestok, end den som er beregnet på at beskrive og forstå almindelige virksomheder eller iværksættere.

Tag mastergrad i landdistriktsudvikling – brug landet/landbrug

Den megen  omtale af yderområder, udkantsområder, rådne bananer eller bagland, som har simret det sidste halve år, hvis ikke mere, har på godt og ondt sat fokus på landdistriktsudviklingen.

Nu er der kommet en masteruddannelse for dem, der vitterlig vil gøre noget ud af at uddanne sig til at forbedre forholdene for iværksættere og selvstændige i landområderne.

Landmaster, hedder den selvfølgelig, og det er et interessant program, der bydes på.
Det er Hanne W. Tanvig, der er uddannelsesleder. Hun kommer på Mikronets jubilæumsseminar til fødselsdagsrecptionen for at fortælle om de nye selvstændige, som man ser flere og flere af ude på landet. Dem, der bruger landet uden at være dem der driver landbrug.

Masteruddannelsen har ansøgningsfrist i disse dage, så det er noget med at skynde sig. Det er ikke helt billigt, men er kompetencegivende.
Og nogle af denne blogs læsere vil være i målgruppen og være interesserede i landdistriktsudvikling – det er mest til jer, dette blogindlæg.

Master i landdistriktsudvikling og landskabsforvaltning er en kompetencegivende efteruddannelse, som henvender sig til personer med en lang eller mellemlang uddannelse og mindst 3 års erhvervserfaring. Hele forløbet tager 3 år, fordelt på 6 moduler og svarer til et års fuldtidsstudie. Man kan både tage modulerne enkeltvis som almindelige efteruddannelseskurser eller man kan følge hele uddannelsen.

Business LF – the meeting

The interest in attending was such that the organisers are planning to hold a couple of extra meetings so as to get as much input as possible.
After an introduction of the Business LF concept by John Brædder and Stig Vestergaard where the budget was very briefly touched upon and the fact that this meeting was only to gather ideas was emphasised, we were divided into 6 workshops and asked to first of all decide if Business LF is a workable concept and then come up with ideas – using a ‘helicopter perspective’.
The worrying thing was that at our workshop there were only 3 members who actually have a business – and all 3 of us had invited ourselves. The others were employees of the 2 municipalities. And there were no mention of agriculture as a business and no representatives – 2 serious omissions in my opinion.
The meeting closed with a brief summary of each workshops findings, listed below. There was a complete consensus that Business LF is a good concept and that the islands should have been united in achieving common goals long since. The concept is planned as a society.
Main comments from the workshops – not in any specific order.
• Why 2 municipalities, 1 covering Lolland Falster would make economic sense
• No mention of very small businesses and their interests – should be taken into serious consideration
• No mention of the various grass-root enthusiastic activists who do so much to keep things going in the various villages – must be considered
• No mention of the agricultural sector!
• Need collaboration and cooperation between business and tourist workers to promote LF tourism
• Focus on wider market including Germany
• Business LF must be seen as an umbrella organisation which will promote the area
• The new incentive must be followed through and not end through neglect and indifference as has happened to so many other initiatives
• Must place emphasis on communication and information, openness
• Eventually include Langeland, Møn etc. in the project
• Carry out a knowledge audit to identify clusters and existing skills in the region
• Need much more advertising to get the region known – we are not good at praising ourselves, a change is needed
• The project must be realistic
• Improved access to the leaders of Business LF – at present it is very difficult to get any action
• Funding is important – what will happen to the various organisations that now will be closed to become a part of Business LF
• Why make it a society, why not make it a limited company?

All in all, an interesting meeting that shows just how much needs improving. I came away with the distinct impression that micros and other very small businesses have not been considered as yet and hope that our input will help. At least it was recorded.

Mikronet and Business Lolland-Falster

An exciting development was announced at the recent general meeting of Business Council for Lolland Falster, when Stig Vestergaard, Mayor of Lolland Kommune and John Brædder, Mayor of Guldborgsund Kommune, announced that a new collaboration between the 2 municipalities and businesses on LF is expected to be launched  1st January 2011. They suggested that all the various organisations who work to promote the islands unite with local businesses in a new effective development organisation ’Business Lolland-Falster’, “so we ensure that we all work toward the same goal and that we exploit resources in the best possible manner. Realisation of this suggestion will mean that we, in future, will have a common entry to promotion of business and tourism on Lolland-Falster.”

The list of organisations and firms involved was impressive, but we, the small businesses of LF who are an integral part of business on the islands (and the rest of Denmark) were not mentioned. So I wrote a letter on behalf of Mikronet to both Stig and John, pointing out that Mikronet represents more than 500 micro businesses and about half of these are located on LF.

Microenterprises represent a huge potential for LF, particularly in connection with the Fehmarn Belt project and other major projects, but are also an incentive to show other micros that LF is an attractive place to live and work. And that we contribute positively to the development of the area.

Imagine my delight when Mikronet received an invitation to join ‘Business Lolland-Falster’. I’ll be attending the inaugural cafe meeting as Mikronet’s representative. An open discussion of visions, ideas, projects etc. will take place.

So if you have any burning visions, ideas etc. that you would like have mentioned at the meeting please let me know. If I am not able to present them on the 17th, we will definitely do so at subsequent information and discussion meetings.

Micro enterprises – support, survival or death?

Is Denmark doing anything to help us Micro businesses survive in the present financial climate?

I haven’t found anything on the Internet where I have been searching for some statistical information about the actual number of Micros forced to close or expected to close, but without any success.  So it is cheering to note that the EU Commission at least  –if not doing anything much concrete – is aware of the problem.
I did find a SME Fact Sheet about Danish SMEs/Micros. This points out that the value added by Danish SMEs is substantially higher than the EU average.  So why don’t we get the proper support to survive without the continual struggle which has meant that many  micros have had to close down or been put on the shelf while the owners have had to take employment elsewhere?

“In Denmark there are approximately 37 SMEs per 1000 inhabitants, which is almost in line with the EU average of ca 40. The proportion of SMEs as compared to all enterprises is also at par, however displaying a comparatively more important small and medium-sized enterprises sector than the respective EU average shares. On the other hand, the Danish share of micro enterprises is lower than that of the EU average. In terms of SME employment, Danish SMEs account for a somewhat smaller share of total employment than the EU average. Nevertheless, the value added of the Danish SMEs is substantially higher than the EU average.”

Not dated but the statistics referred to are from 2004 -2005 – why don’t people date these pieces of information! It would significantly increase the information value to know how dated the information is! (Rant over…)

The Euractive homepage  (SMEs need ‘strong commissioner’ for enterprise   30.09.09
)had an interesting snippet:
Leitl said small firms should be prioritised. “SMEs are suffering most from the current crisis. They should get all the help they need. But also when the crisis is over, SMEs should not be left behind. All policies should be made in view of the needs and demands of small enterprises. The Small Business Act was only the first policy step,” he said.
So the powers that be are aware of the importance of supporting Micro and SMEs, but I would love to see come real, practical evidence. Any suggestions where I can find some?
