The value of blogs and Twitter as marketing tools

I have been active as a Mikronet blogger since the blog was first started, and have enjoyed the comments – although these are rare, they are generally a boost to the day – but I’ve decided to take a break, at least until the autumn.
I have just read a good piece about the benefits of blogging: Blogging: It’s More than a Brand (Jessica Miller-Merrell • March 24, 2010 ) who covers networking, media access, getting your company known etc – have a look. She sets out some very good reasons why blogging is of commercial value as well as being of value to colleagues as a tool for dissemination of information.

Incidentially, I found her article through a Tweet: What Your Twitter Stream Tells Us About You  which is also well worth having a look at.

The remarkable thing to me is that these two interesting items have only just been posted and yet have already gained readers and comments.

So, if you are not already blogging and would like to have a go, how about continuing the English language entries while I’m on a break? It is fun, you and your company gain visibility and you get to meet some interesting people.
It is a pity that Mette Juul’s (our new blogger) blogs are in Danish, as our non-Danish readers are missing some very good and relevant stuff about handling the delicate aspect of money – how to price yourself, how to charge for work done, really relevant for us Mikronetters. We need more of this really relevant stuff!

Tweeting Sociale netvœrker

Twitter er helt fantastiskt! Jeg har fået rigtig mange gode links til business intelligence artikler og kontakt til nogen meget dygtige og engagerede mennesker som deler af deres viden og fundne interessante links – og så er det at det er realtime er et extra bonus. Jeg er medlem af Linked-in Business Intelligence group. En af medlemmerne forslog at vi skulle følge hinandens Tweets – ud af de 10 som jeg følger er der specielt 3 som er virkelige meget profesionelle og hjœlpsomme, en som sender en lille vits (en linie lang) ud hver morgen, en pun som desvœrre ikke kan oversœttes til dansk da det er  engelsk ordplay, men som er et sjovt link til hans navn og firma. God business – man husker hans navn. Jeg var lidt bange for Twitter ville tage for meget tid, men det er OK, tiden brugt giver helt bestemt pote, specielt når man ved hvilke Tweets som regel er vœrd at se på.

Updating of skills – on-line training

It is really important to keep one’s skills up to date, particularly when working as a free agent who does not have daily input from colleagues   working in the same environment.
Last evening I participated in an e-seminar on “ Performing Effective Freedom To Operate Searches on STN”.
Although I have been doing FTO and other patent searches for many years, I always learn something new  - of patent searches, patent law or advances in the databases’ search facilities.

For instance -It is becoming important now to use multi-language terms when searching, as more and more countries’ patents are being added to the databases.

This particular training session was most helpful in that it covered all the various aspects of FTO  e.g. the reason behind the various complex processes that are required for a comprehensive search, instead of focusing only on the methods of searching and the command language.
It made me focus on the fact that what is evident to me could be unclear to my clients and in future I’ll make sure that this aspect of the FTO is communicated clearly.
I can really recommend good on-line training. Updating of skills, experts to hand to deal with questions – and no need to travel!

A’va for en fisk?

Lad mig præsentere mig selv ….

Jeg er ny blogger her på www.mikronet.dk Hvis du er lige så nysgerrig som jeg, så vil du sikkert gerne vide lidt mere om hvad jeg er for en fisk.

Jeg er selvstændig vidensformidler, mentorcoach, samlivscoach / parterapeut og supervisor med egen klinik og kursuscenter siden 2002.

Mit daglige arbejdsfelt er inden for det jeg selv kalder ”hverdagens og lykkens psykologi”.

Jeg hjælper i konsultation dagligt mænd og kvinder med at få lyst til at kysse på hinanden igen, børn til at slappe af og tro på sig selv, kvinder til at finde den indre glæde, styrke og ro frem, mænd til handle så de får bedre resultater, medarbejdere til at trives bedre, og selvstændige med at takle solojobbet – og meget mere.

Mit faglige udgangspunkt har altid særligt været livsfilosofi, kønsforskningen, neuro-psykologien, den kognitive adfærdsterapi, positiv psykologi, psykoeducation og evidensbaseret coaching…. Sagt på godt gammel dansk : undervisning i kilder og veje til et bedre (sam)liv. Fokus er forståelsesorienteret, pragmatisk, fremadrettet og løsningsorienteret – og altid balanceret og individuelt tilpasset. Ingen standard løsninger her, tak!

Nogle af mine ynglingsmotoer er ”Det er i handlinges verden forvandlingen sker” og ”Fred være med det”.

Siden barn har en af mine ynglingsbeskæftigelser været at læse i leksikoner og at filosofere over livet og universet. Glæden og energien bobler i mig når jeg opdager og lærer noget nyt.  Og jeg elsker at give det videre. 

Den daglige reflektion følger mig stadig, og altid engageret og nysgerrig elsker jeg når jeg har anledning til at sige ”Hvor interessant!” og ”Det giver god mening / Det er der en vis logik i”.

Mit liv cirkler omkring alle de emner det vedrører vores personlige kompetencer, ressourcer og trivsel – også dem vi skal bruge på jobbet – og mine blogindlæg vil ligeledes cirkle om de tanker jeg gør mig om de personlige oplevelser og udfordringer jeg møder i mit arbejde og i min dagligdag som selvstændig.

Jeg vil dele min oplevelser, opdagelser og tanker med mig. Jeg håber du vil gøre det samme i dine kommentarer til mine blogindlæg.

Asking the right questions

Following up on Anne’s blog entry about focusing on the viewpoint of the customer,  I have been thinking about how to better inform my clients about what they can expect from me, rather than on what I offer them, and was delighted to find a really relevant article in FreePint’s FUMSI.  “Key to Research Success: Asking the Right Questions” by Jane John.

All information professionals know the problem that clients  phrase their requirements to fit what they expect the answer to be – rather than what they really want.  Jane sets out this problem very clearly -

A key step in matching your ‘search’ with your ‘find’ is asking the right question at the start of the process. Competitive Intelligence professionals may call this ‘requirements’ or key intelligence topics. Corporate library reference staff may call it the reference interview. An independent information professional (IIP) doing a large project may call it project scoping. The bottom line is the same – what is the question?

And even better, list some very useful ways to tackle this core issue.

Although the article is aimed at information professionals it is equally relevant to the many Mikronetters who are involved with coaching or journalism – I recommend that that you have a look at it.
